A combustion system for the new future internal combustion engine has been developed using
analytical CFD methods without any physical tests at Ford Motor Company. This new combustion
system, which includes intake, exhaust, combustion chamber, and piston crown, has been designed
to meet two conflicting objectives: performance and fuel consumption. Various types of CFD,
optimization, and correlation methods have been utilized to optimize the design, allowing to meet the
targets, and setup the virtual models in CFD. A couple of highly correlated empirical models for the
combustion quality have been implemented to reduce computational time, and optimization tools such
as DOE base and Adjoint solver base have been used to drive the design optimization and explore
the design space, as well as tune the virtual model. As a result, Ford Motor Company was able to
achieve its performance and fuel economy targets for its new prototype engine without any physical
tests before the first physical test evaluation.
